Camp Counselors

Why Camp Counseling?

Being a camp counselor is more than just a summer job. It’s a chance to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people. At Camp Accomplish, our counselors play an important role in shaping memories and experiences that our campers carry with them for years. We offer a range of positions, so whether you’re interested in art or archery, you can bring your unique skills and be part of an unforgettable summer.

Role and Responsibilities of a Camp Counselor

Camp counseling is a full-time, immersive role, typically requiring commitment around the clock for six days a week. Counselors are responsible for ensuring camper safety, health, and happiness. If working with kids feels rewarding and natural for you, and you can bring patience and enthusiasm to your interactions, you might be a great fit.

Counselors at Camp Accomplish work long hours that are physically and emotionally demanding. Personal space and privacy are limited, as counselors usually share cabin space with other staff and campers. This environment requires adaptability and a collaborative spirit. Although demanding, the role offers immense rewards: you’ll build friendships, explore scenic trails, take on our zipline, share campfire stories, and have a lasting impact on others’ lives.

We hope you’ll consider joining us at Camp Accomplish this summer. With your help, we can continue to provide campers with meaningful experiences that foster growth, learning, and enjoyment.

Our Goals for Staff

To ensure the best possible experience for both campers and staff, we aim to achieve the following goals in all we do at Camp Accomplish:

  • Provide a life-changing experience where campers gain independence, self-confidence, responsibility, group living skills, and try new activities that build decision-making skills.
  • Ensure every camper receives individual attention and support, with no one left behind.
  • Create meaningful bonds between counselors and campers, leaving a lasting, positive impact.
  • Foster a strong, supportive community where counselors rely on each other and work as a cohesive team.
  • Encourage counselors to understand how their actions shape camper experiences, using this awareness to make thoughtful choices.

A Typical Day for Counselors at Camp Accomplish

Here’s a glimpse into a typical day and the range of responsibilities that counselors have at Camp Accomplish:

7:45 a.m.: Camper wake-up and Morning Meds: Counselors need to be ready for the day as they are expected to begin direct supervision of their campers during this time. Some campers will need to go to the health center for morning medications, others will need help getting ready, others will simply be raring to go!

8 a.m.: Day Camp Arrival: Each counseling team will decide which staff will go meet the day campers and bring them back to the flagpole to meet their group!

8:15 a.m.: Flag Raising: Teams take turns helping their campers lead flag raising—a time for campers to join together in camp songs and announcements.

8:30 a.m.: Breakfast: Meals may be served buffet style or family style, depending on the camper group, and there are options to accommodate such diets as gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, kosher and more. Teams are welcome to eat inside the dining hall, or outside in the nearby pavilion if the weather is nice.

9 a.m.: Cabin Clean up: Campers sweep the floor; hang wet bathing suits on the line, etc. Counselors supervise, organize, and participate in this effort. This time may also be used to prepare for the day: pack needed clothes and shoes for specialty activities, fill water bottles, put on sunscreen, etc.

9:30 a.m.: Activity Periods 1-3: Teams rotate through different activities morning and afternoon. Sunday afternoons, staff help overnight campers express their interests in the different activities – this feedback helps determine the activity schedule for the week.

12:30 p.m.: Lunch: Half of your team will choose to be off during lunch and rest. If it is your time off, you can hang out in the staff lounge, try out a hammock, etc. You may also leave camp during time-off and we allow counselors to use camp vehicles. If you are on duty during this time, you are on time off during dinner and evening activity.

1:15 p.m.: After-lunch meds and Rest: Assist campers to get after-lunch medications as needed. Then, have a quiet time for campers and staff. Campers often write letters, play cards, read or sleep. Counselors should be awake and participating and guiding group interactions as needed.

2:30 p.m.: Activity Period 4-5

4:30 p.m.: Snack, then Day Camp prepares to head home

4:45 p.m.: Day Camp leaves, then Overnight has Activity Period 6

5:45 p.m.: Flag Lowering: A time for camp songs, celebrations of camp firsts, and the awarding of the golden plunger (for cleanest cabin space)!

6 p.m.: Dinner: If counselors were on duty during lunch and rest, they are off duty during dinner and evening activity.

7 p.m.: Evening Activity: An exciting time for all of overnight camp to have fun together! Activities are different each night (ex. campfire, pool party, bingo, organized mass chaos, talent show, dance).

8:30 p.m.: Prepare for Bed, including night meds: Assist campers to the health center for evening medications as needed.

8:40 p.m.: Cabin chats: A time for staff members to have a brief sharing time with their campers and ask them about their day. Counselors may also read to their campers or let the cabin listen to music quietly.

9:30 p.m.: Lights Out: Once campers are settled in bed, staff are welcome to rotate breaks out around camp as long as there is a staff member on-duty in the room at all times to monitor the campers. All staff members are expected to be back in their cabins (or designated staff only sleeping area) by midnight. Emergencies can occur at night, and we need to know where each person to check on is, and that each cabin is properly supervised.

Time Off, Cell Phones, Alcohol, and Smoking

Camp counselors have just under two days off weekly (Friday at 6 p.m. to Sunday at 11 a.m.) and two to three hours off each weekday. On days off, counselors may use camp sports equipment like balls and fishing rods. Camp vehicles are also available for use. Cell phones are only permitted during designated time-off, promoting an “unplugged” environment. Campers may also not use devices, except for medical or communication purposes.

Alcohol, marijuana, and illegal substances are not permitted on Camp Accomplish property. Staff are expected to return sober and ready for duties. Additionally, counselors must refrain from smoking on camp property to set a positive example for campers.
